Mastic cookies coated with hazelnut

The big and fat gum mastic cookies generally covered with sesame seeds that you can see at bakeries of Ayvalık, are one of the most known speciality of this beautiful city.
During the grape season, these cookies are cooked with fresh grape juice. For that reason they are not too sweet and a perfect partner for afternoon tea and conversation!
I made a similar cookie, coated with hazelnut to give an extra flavour.
  • 150 gr butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 t baking powder
  • 1 gr gum mastic crystals (crushed)
  • 1/2 t mahaleb
  • Cream butter, sugar, mahaleb and egg yolk in a bowl. Add flour and baking powder gradually.

Finally add crushed gum mastic powder and make a dough.

Wrap and chill the dough one hour in the refrigerator.

Knead again. Shape the cookies into balls with your palms.

    for top:

  • 1 cup hazelnut (coarsely chopped)
  • Coat the balls with chopped hazelnuts.

Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in 180° C until lightly golden.
